How to clean bronze and brass at home

Bronze and brass darken over time — a natural process that many people see as part of their charm (the patina). If you’d still like an item to shine, here is how to clean it safely.
Everyday care
- Dust with a dry, soft cloth (microfibre).
- Never rinse items with mechanisms (compasses, clocks) under water.
- Keep them away from damp and direct sunlight.
Easy cleaning with household items
- Mix lemon juice and baking soda into a paste.
- Apply with a soft cloth and leave for 5 minutes.
- Rinse with a little water and dry immediately and thoroughly.
Take care around glass, leather and wood — the paste is only for the metal parts.
What to avoid
- Steel wool and abrasive cleaners — they scratch the surface.
- Bleach and strong acids — they leave stains.
- Lacquered items need no polishing; just dust them.
Prefer the patina?
Many collectors love the dark antique look. If you do too, just dust the piece and let time do its work.
